T5 Silicon Valley Data Center: CFD Analysis for Optimized Cooling Efficiency - Newark, CA
Category: Data Center
Overall Area: 36,000 ft²
Services Provided: Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Analysis
Completion Date: 2024
Project Description
The T5 Silicon Valley Data Center is a state-of-the-art facility designed to meet the increasing demand for data storage and processing in Silicon Valley. Spanning 36,000 ft², the facility operates with a total power load of 8,000 kW. The mechanical cooling system features thirty-two (32) 81-ton, 36,500 CFM horizontal discharge Computer Room Air Handler (CRAH) units.
Scope of Work
Pragmatic PE conducted a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis to ensure the mechanical cooling system operated effectively under both:
Steady-state conditions: All CRAH units operational.
Failure conditions: Two of the 32 CRAH units offline.
Our team developed detailed CFD models incorporating:
CRAH units and data racks
Architectural components, including walls and aisle containment
By simulating the thermal performance under varying conditions, we verified the system’s ability to maintain optimal cooling efficiency, ensuring reliable operation under high power loads.
Key Deliverables
Airflow dynamics assessment to optimize cooling distribution
Cooling efficiency analysis to verify system performance
Impact evaluation of equipment heat loads on facility climate
Validation of mechanical design accuracy to meet strict operational requirements
