Project Description

The San Rafael High School STEAM Building is a newly constructed two-story facility spanning 53,400 square feet. This state-of-the-art building includes seven classrooms, a ceramics studio, a two-story fabrication lab for the school’s Academy of Engineering, multiple all-gender restrooms, and an outdoor courtyard. Designed as a high-performance educational facility, the project earned a CHPS Designed designation by meeting the Collaborative for High-Performance Schools (CHPS) standards.

The project’s occupancy classification is E & S-1, and the construction type is II-B. It fully complies with Title 24 requirements and adheres to CALGreen codes, ensuring energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.

Pragmatic Professional Engineers, in partnership with Eichler Associates Inc., oversaw the commissioning of the new HVAC systems, lighting controls, and plumbing systems to ensure optimal performance and compliance with project specifications:

  • HVAC System: The HVAC system includes fan coils, condensing units, packaged electric heat pump AC units, make-up air units, split system fan coils and condensing units, ceiling fans, VAV boxes, packaged rooftop units, and exhaust fans.

  • Lighting Control System: The building features Wattstopper lighting controls, commissioned to ensure energy efficiency and flexible operation.

  • Plumbing System: The plumbing system utilizes electric water heaters to meet the building’s hot water requirements.
